Uganda's roughly 1,080 recorded species pack an outsized range of habitat into a small country — papyrus swamps, Albertine Rift montane forest, and open savanna within a few hours' drive of each other. These are the birds travelers on Hudhud's Uganda itineraries ask about most.
Uganda can be birded year-round. The drier windows, roughly December to February and June to August, generally make forest trails at Bwindi and Kibale easier underfoot, while wetter months bring peak song and breeding activity. Palearctic migrants are present roughly November to April. We schedule forest days and permits around the conditions you are likely to meet.
Balaeniceps rex
One of Africa's most sought-after birds: a huge, stork-like wader with slate-grey plumage and a massive, boot-shaped bill. An ambush hunter of lungfish and other prey in papyrus swamps, standing motionless for long periods — Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe is Uganda's most reliable site.

The largest turaco: slate-blue body, a tall blue crest, a yellow-and-red-tipped bill, and a long tail. Moves through the forest canopy in small, noisy groups, often first detected by its loud, far-carrying call before it's seen.

Corythornis cristatus
A small, vivid kingfisher with bright metallic-blue upperparts, a short blue-and-black crest, and rufous cheeks and underparts. Favors reeds and low perches over still water — common along the Kazinga Channel.

Uganda's national bird, pictured on its flag: blue-grey body, black-and-white face, red throat wattle, and a crown of stiff golden plumes. Found in marshes, grassland, and cultivated land near water across the country.

A striking, secretive bushshrike: black upperparts, a bright red breast, and a yellow crown. Restricted to papyrus swamps around Lake Victoria and similar wetlands — a genuine specialist that rarely leaves this habitat.

A plain, long-tailed, long-billed warbler with a white eyebrow, found very locally in high-elevation marshes of the Albertine Rift, including sites near Bwindi. Secretive, but will perch up to deliver its dry, trilling song.
